Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet has approved a targeted subsidy of Rs 200 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 12 refills per year to the beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).
This targeted support aims to encourage the use of clean cooking fuel and shield the PMUY beneficiaries from the rising international prices of LPG.
As of 1 March 2023, there are 9.59 crore PMUY beneficiaries in the country.
All PMUY beneficiaries are eligible for this targeted subsidy.
The subsidy will be credited directly to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries and is expected to ensure sustained LPG adoption and usage among PMUY consumers, helping them switch completely to cleaner cooking fuel.
The Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL)) have already been providing this subsidy since 22 May 2022.
The total expenditure for this subsidy will be Rs 6,100 crore for the financial year 2022-23 and Rs 7,680 crore for 2023-24, according to a government release on Friday (24 March).
The average LPG consumption of PMUY consumers has increased by 20 percent from 3.01 refills in 2019-20 to 3.68 in 2021-22, acco
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched by the government in May 2016 to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women of poor households, making LPG available to rural and deprived poor households.
