France is set to send 7,000 soldiers to the northeastern town of Arras in response to a terrorist attack where a teacher was fatally stabbed and three others were severely wounded on Friday (13 October).
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack, which occurred on Friday in Arras, known for its large Jewish and Muslim populations, as an act of "Islamist terror".
The deployment of the soldiers will be completed by Monday evening
In light of the attack, France has raised its alert level to the highest position after Macron chaired a crucial security meeting on Friday.
Macron informed the public that security forces had successfully thwarted an "attempted attack" in a different region.
"This school was struck by the barbarity of Islamist terrorism," Macron said after visiting the school, saying the victim had "probably saved many lives" with his courage in seeking to block the attacker.
The suspect, Mohammed Moguchkov, who is in his twenties, was apprehended by the police.
Moguchkov hails from Chechnya, a predominantly Muslim region in southern Caucasus in Russia.
He was already listed on the French national register, known as "Fiche S," as a potential threat. He was currently being monitored by France's domestic intelligence agency, the DGSI.
Based on initial findings of the investigation, Moguchkov was heard shouting the Arabic phrase "Allahu akbar!" (God is greatest).

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
