War of words erupted between former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir and Jammu and Kashmir’s ex-Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday (2 April) over the issue of the latter’s statement about restoring the title of Wazir-e-Azam (Prime Minister) and Sadr-e-Riyasat (President) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Slamming Abdullah for his statement, Gambhir tweeted, “Omar Abdullah wants a separate PM for J&K & I want to walk on oceans! Omar Abdullah wants a separate PM for J&K & I want pigs to fly! More than a separate PM Omar Abdullah needs some sleep followed by a strong coffee! If he still doesn’t understand then a green Pakistani passport,”2

Addressing a public gathering in Kashmir’s Bandipora on Monday (1 April), the National Conference (NC) leader had said that he would work for restoration of the President and Prime Minister post in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Rest of the princely states merged with the country without condition but we had said that we will have our own identity, our own Constitution. We had our own 'Sadr-e-Riyasat' (President) and 'Wazir-e-Azam' (Prime Minister) too. By God's grace, we will bring that back," Abdullah was quoted by ANI as saying.

Abdullah, in his response to Gambhir, said that he should stick to the “stuff” the former cricketer knows about.

“Gautam, I never played much cricket because I knew I wasn’t very good at it. You don’t know very much about J&K,it’s history or the role of JKNC in shaping that history yet you insist on displaying that ignorance for all to see. Stick to stuff you know about, tweet about the IPL,” Abdullah tweeted.

However, Gambhir seemed in no mood to back down and retorted, “Never mind your lack of cricketing prowess but Kashmiris and our country would have been well served if you knew a thing or two about selfless governance. By the way history is always consistent but perspectives are subjective. Better clean ur reading glasses.”

The former ace cricketer had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 22 March. He was officially inducted into the party in presence of senior BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad.
