Barely a fortnight after the Centre started registrations for e-way bills, a staggering 28.4 lakh e-way bills have been generated by transporters, reports PTI.
Registrations began on 16 January and in the 14-day trial period 3.4 lakh e-way bills were registered yesterday (30 January) alone. Under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, e-way bills are required for inter-state transportation of goods beyond 10 km with a value of Rs 50,000 and above from 1 February.
The government expects the system to function as an anti-evasion tool and net more taxes for the exchequer.
We saw a phenomenal number of e-way bills being generated on January 30. We expect the momentum to continue in the days to come. Taxpayers are not only getting accustomed to e-way bill system but they are also able to avoid a lot of hassles that existed for them earlier.GSTN CEO Prakash Kumars
Karnataka led the race yesterday with 1.4 lakh bills being generated, while Rajasthan and Haryana saw 26,500 and 23,500 e-way bills, respectively.
As many as 11,581 transporters not registered under GST have registered themselves under the e-way bill system. Under the GST regime, businesses with a turnover of up to Rs 20 lakh per annum need not register with the GSTN.
