The Election Commission is expected to carry out a delimitation exercise in Jammu and Kashmir - now an Union Territory. As a result the number of seats in the legislative assembly are expected to increase from 107 to 114.
The Union Territory would be run on a the model followed by Puducherry, thus provisions under Article 239A which are applicable to Puducherry would also apply to Jammu and Kashmir, journalist Manu Pubby has reported.
It was recently reported that the Central government was mulling on lifting the freeze on delimitation in the state. The move could result in increase in the representation of Jammu in the J&K assembly.
This has led many analysts to believe that henceforth Jammu will be the dominant force, thus ending Kashmir and Kashmiri parties’ hegemony in region’s politics.
