Nirbhaya Rape Case: Vinay Sharma, One Of Four Convicts, Files Curative Petition In SC Against Death Sentence

BySwarajya Staff

One of the convicts in the Nirbhaya case, Vinay Sharma, on Thursday (9 January) filed a curative petition before the Supreme Court against the death sentence.

The curative petition was filed in the apex court by Sharma’s lawyer A P Singh.

A trial court on Tuesday (7 January) had issued death warrant against four convicts for their execution on 22 January.

Besides Vinay, other convicts Pawan, Akshay, and Mukesh Singh are facing the gallows. After issuing the black warrants, the court gave them time of two weeks to file curative and mercy petition.

The Delhi trial court verdict came seven years after Nirbhaya’s death on 29 December 2012. The Supreme Court earlier in the month had dismissed the review petition filed by one of the convicts in the case - Akshay Singh.

The fifth accused in the case had committed suicide a few years back and the sixth accused was released three years after spending time in a Juvenile home.

The death warrant was welcomed by Nirbhaya’s mother who was quoted as saying, “This judgement will reinforce people's faith in the judiciary. My daughter will get justice.”

“I am happy with the court's decision....This decision will instil fear in people who commit such crimes,” the victim’s father said.
