The Supreme Court has refused to extend the 31 July deadline for preparing a final version of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam residents, reports PTI.
The bench consisting of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice R F Nariman also provided the Assam NRC’s coordinator Prateek Hajela a ‘free hand’ to tackle claims and objections arising from incorrect inclusion or exclusion of individuals’ names on the list.
The court’s direction was given after Hajela submitted before it that a large number of indviduals who had raised objections over the inclusion of some other persons in the draft NRC were themselves not willing to appear before panels adjudicating such matters.
The draft NRC, released on 30 July 2018, had around 2.89 crore names in it. 40,70,707 people were not included in the list. Out of this number, the rejected names constitute 37,59,630 and those on hold are 2,48,077.
