Tamil Nadu: Church Priests Allegedly Fomenting Trouble In Cyclone Relief Controversy

BySwarajya Staff

As it recovers from the effects of Cyclone Ockhi, southern Tamil Nadu has been rocked by allegations of the Church trying to use the tragedy to further it’s political motives.

Bhartiya Janta Party leader, H. Raja while addressing the media said that the Church priests in Kanyakumari are leading an agitation by a section of people who want to blame Prime Minister Modi for shortfalls in the relief efforts after the tragedy. He called out such people for trying to find faults with the Centre’s efforts despite giving all assistance to the relief efforts.

The comments come on the heels of the Defence Minster Nirmala Sitharaman visiting the cyclone-affected areas and after the Navy and Indian Coast Guard were pressed into the relief operations.

The Church has been repeatedly called out for trying to influence politics in the country, the latest being in Gujarat in the wake of state elections. Even the Election Commission had taken note of the Church’s call and issued to a notice to the Gujarat Archbishop.
