BySwarajya Staff

For the first time, Chinese smartphone brands cornered 66 per cent of the Indian smartphone market in a single quarter during Q1 2019, with Chinese firms increasing their volumes faster than the overall market.

Though India’s overall smartphone shipments grew by a meagre four per cent year-on-year (YoY), volumes for the Chinese brands increased by a massive 20 per cent. This surge was driven primarily by brands like Vivo, Realme, and OPPO.

Chinese tech major Xiaomi and South Korea’s Samsung dominated the top seller list. While Xiaomi Redmi 6A continued to the best selling smartphone in the country following multiple price cuts, it was followed by Xiaomi Note 6 Pro, Redmi Y2, Samsung Galaxy M20, and Galaxy A50.

“India’s smartphone market continues to attract a lot of attention from Global and Chinese players. Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions," said Tarun Pathak, Associate Director of Counterpoint Research.

Xiaomi And Samsung In The Lead

Commenting on the performance of different brands, Jain added, “Xiaomi remains the market leader driven by new product launches. However, it faced strong market competition as compared to a year ago. Samsung did a major refresh in its product portfolio launching a new online-only M series."
