Unity Taller Than Liberty: PM Modi Unveils Statue Of Unity On Sardar Patel’s 143rd Birth Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Statue of Unity, a 182 m tall statue built in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, to the nation today (31 October) on the birth anniversary of the legendary leader. Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister had shared his article on contributions of Sardar Patel.

The statue which is built on an islet, Sadhu Bet, near the Sardar Sarovar dam in Narmada district in Gujarat will be the tallest in the world and is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in the United States. Prime Minister also inaugurated the Wall of Unity, a monument defining India’s unity, near the towering structure.

Artists hailing from 29 states and two union territories will give various cultural and musical performances on this occasion. Besides the Statue, a 17 km long valley of flowers, a tent city near the statue for tourists and a museum dedicated to Sardar Patel will also be inaugurated.

Inside the statue, at a height of 153 m, there is a viewing gallery for the tourists to enjoy the view of the dam and mountain ranges. More than 70,000 tonnes of cement, 24,500 tonnes of steel and 1,700 metric tonnes of bronze has been used in the construction of the statue.
