West Bengal Assembly Passes Resolution To Change State’s Name To ‘Bangla’

BySwarajya Staff

In what is being seen as a bid to go up the alphabetical order, the West Bengal assembly has passed a resolution to change the state’s name to ‘Bangla’ according to a report in Economic Times.

The development comes two years after the assembly had passed a resolution to change its name which was rejected by the Centre as the proposal had three names for the state in three different languages. In August 2016, the assembly had proposed changing the state’s name from West Bengal to Bengal in English, Bangla in Bengali and Bangal in Hindi.

This was done as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had reportedly found it annoying whenever West Bengal was at the bottom when listed in alphabetical order. Banerjee would be the last speaker in any event or meeting between the Centre and states she was supposed to address.
