Months after the Padmavati set in Jaipur came under attack, the film’s set in Kolhapur was vandalised and set on fire last night. Reportedly, a few cars parked outside the sets were also damaged. Reports suggest that Bhansali is safe, but the shooting has been stopped till further notice.

The movie has been under the radar ever since its announcement. After the Jaipur attack, Bhansali shifted the base to Kolhapur, Maharashtra, to carry on with the shooting. The Bajirao Mastani director resumed filming at Masai plateau, some 20km from Kolhapur, a few weeks ago.

In Jaipur, Bhansali was manhandled by the members of Karni Sena and accused of incorrectly presenting facts related to the Queen of Chittor. The group claimed that the filmmaker was insulting the Rajputana pride by allegedly showing a romantic sequence between emperor Alauddin Khilji, played by Ranveer Singh, and Rani Padmini, played by Deepika Padukone, which never happened in history.

The Padmavati team clarified on 10 February that there never was and never will be a dream sequence between the two historical characters in the film.

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri took to Twitter today (15 March) to express his sadness at this development in Kolhapur.
