Swarajya Spec: New Surveillance Tech On India-Bangladesh Border Will Help BSF Stem Cross-Border Crime

BySwarajya Videos

Transcript:

At Takimari in Assam’s Dhubri, where the porous border over a riverine area separates India from Bangladesh. This border area in the corner of the country is critical – because, from here, Bangladeshi nationals make their way into India – some in search of a better life, some others to create trouble.

India’s Border Security Force has struggled to guard this area over the years. Keeping watch without the aid of surveillance technology has meant that miscreants have had a free run.

But this changed… recently.

After much talk over the years about installing smart fencing or electronic surveillance in this area, the Dhubri border now has the technology required to prevent illegal border crossing.

The surveillance mechanism is based on the Border Electronically Dominated QRT Interception Technique, or BOLD-QIT. It’s made up of sophisticated microwave communication, day-night surveillance cameras, electro-optic underwater and underground sonar sensors, radars, and more, enabling quick detection of intrusions and allowing response teams to intercept intruders.

With that, the Dhubri border area, which was until now infamous for illegal immigration and activities like cross-border cattle smuggling, can be kept more secure than before.
