In a statement released after raids across 45 locations yesterday (10 November), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has confirmed that the deceased Jameesha Mubeen and his associates were planning a suicide bombing attack in Coimbatore.
According to the NIA, Mubeen had taken a bayath/oath swearing his allegiance to ISIS and planned to cause heavy damage to the religious and cultural institutions of a particular religion and spread terror among them.
The six arrested accused had collaborated with Mubeen to carry out the attacks by helping him procure the explosives and make the improvised explosive devices (IEDs), including a vehicle-borne IED.
Regarding the seizures in yesterday’s raids, the NIA said that incriminating evidence was gathered by seizing documents and digital devices.
After the NIA statement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tamil Nadu president K Annamalai tweeted saying that the stance of his party has been vindicated as they had been saying that it was a terror attack right from the beginning, while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) was refusing to acknowledge the terror angle.
He once again criticised the Intelligence Department of the state, saying "its existence serves very little purpose" and added that "the people of Coimbatore were saved by God’s grace".
