Calcutta High Court yesterday (4 April) pulled up South Dum Dum Municipality, run by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), for not granting permission to a group of residents to perform Ram Navami celebrations. The municipal body had denied permission to Lake Town Ram Navami Puja Committee, following which the group had approached the High Court.
Justice Harish Tandon, who noted that the permission was not granted despite the group having made a request well before the deadline, ordered the TMC-run body to give the necessary permission for Ram Navami celebrations immediately.
The court has also advised other departments, including fire brigade, the police and the power supply authorities to accord them permission.
The group had filed a request with the municipal body on 22 March and reminded the body about its application yet again on 29 March. But it did not receive any response from the concerned authority, petitioner’s counsel Lokenath Chatterjee claimed.
