Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Surat Diamond Bourse in Gujarat today (17 December), heralded as the world's largest and most advanced hub for international diamond and jewellery trade.

The SDB relocated from Mumbai to Surat, in a significant development in the gemstone and jewellery industry.

The recently completed International Diamond Bourse in Surat, Gujarat, has earned the distinction of being the world's largest office building, surpassing even the Pentagon.

Surat, known as the global hub for the gem trade, particularly diamond cutting, hosts over 90 per cent of the world's diamond cutting activities.

Spanning 35 acres, the 15-storey building comprises nine interconnected rectangular structures linked through a central spine, boasting a vast floor space of over 7.1 million square feet.

Designed by the Indian architecture firm Morphogenesis, the decision to surpass the Pentagon's size was not dictated by competition requirements but rather driven by market demand.

This flexibility allowed the project to scale up according to the needs of the industry.

Importantly, all offices within the building were pre-purchased by diamond companies before construction commenced, indicating substantial pre-existing interest and investment in the project from the diamond industry, contributing to its expansive size and comprehensive scope.
