Amazon India is said to be planning to undertake a layoff exercise that as part of the e-commerce giant's global plan to deal with slowing slaes and mouning losses.

The company, which operates various businesses in India including e-commerce, Prime Video and Amazon Web Services, employs around 1 lakh people in the country.

The layoff exercise in India could potentially impact at least a few hundred jobs across divisions, Economic Times cited multiple people aware of the matter.

Amazon's lay off plan in India comes amid reports that the company is expected to let go 10,000 corporate and technology employees globally.

The report added that while the exact number of affected Amazon India employees is not certain, there is a likelihood that the “cuts could go deeper than a few hundred given Amazon’s sizeable workforce here".

“The retrenchment is happening here (India) and discussions are underway on the numbers. There is a sense it might be relatively higher as compared to peers like Meta-owned Facebook and others where India was not affected in a big way,” the ET report quoted a source as saying.

The layoffs would be across engineering and other departments, the report added.

The development comes after Twitter, which was bought by Elon Musk in a $44 billion deal, recently sacked majority of its 200 odd employees in India as part of the new owner’s decision to lay off half of the company’s workforce globally.
