BBC has reportedly "acknowledged" that it may have paid lower taxes than required in India.

The British broadcaster has been under the scrutiny of Indian tax authorities, and a survey was conducted in February on its offices in Delhi and Mumbai.

BBC is yet to file revised returns or make a written submission to the I-T department.

A survey is an exercise to collect information such as books of account, cash, stock, or other valuable article or thing, from companies.

"It is only a statement of intent so far, there is no payment," a government source was quoted by Times of India as saying.

The survey came after BBC aired a controversial documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

After the survey in February, the Indian income tax department had alleged that the income and profits disclosed by BBC's units were not commensurate with the scale of operations in India.

It further claimed that the surveys indicated that tax had not been paid on certain remittances, which were not disclosed as income in India by the foreign entities of the group.
