Sources say Warner Bros Discovery Inc is nearing a deal for a Harry Potter online TV series, based on the bestselling young adult books.

Unnamed sources revealed to Bloomberg that every season of the series will be based on one of Harry Potter author J K Rowling's seven books, providing fans with new material for years to come.

HBO's parent company, Warner Bros, is planning to announce a new streaming strategy in the coming week and is looking at the potential new series as a cornerstone of that strategy.

However, negotiations for the new series to debut on HBO and the web are still ongoing between Rowling, Warner Bros chief executive David Zaslav, and HBO chief Casey Bloys.

Warner Bros and HBO are reportedly developing a series that will further explore the world of Rowling's bestselling books.

The film studio had already successfully adapted all seven books into box-office hits, concluding with a two-part movie finale.

Warner Bros has been interested in expanding the popular book series, but Rowling had only approved a stage play and theme park. She had not authorised new movies or a TV show.

According to insiders, the author will have some input in the series to maintain its loyalty to her work, but will not have a hands-on role.

The original works depict the journey of a young wizard, orphaned since infancy, raised by non-magical guardians.

Learning of his magical abilities, he receives an invitation to enroll in the prestigious Hogwarts School, the foremost institution for wizards globally.

The Harry Potter books have sold 600 million copies in 85 languages over 25 years, making it an all-time bestseller, according to the United States publisher Scholastic Corp.

The eight movies based on the series earned over $7.7 billion in global box office sales, as per Box Office Mojo.
