INS Shankush (Via Indian Navy)
Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a deal worth Rs 2,725 crore with Mazagaon Docks Limited (MDL) for Medium life certification (MRLC) of INS Shankush.
The INS Shankush, is the second of the four Shishumar class submarine bought from Germany.
The German designed Shishumar class diesel-electric submarine is a version of Type-209 submarines, which were first commissioned in the Navy in 1986. The first two submarines were directly imported from Germany, while the last two were assembled by MDL.
INS Shankush will be delivered to the Navy in 2026 after the refit.
"This project is an important step towards development of MDL as Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) Hub for supporting the industrial ecosystem of India," the MoD added.
The project will create 1,200 mandays per day of employment and is expected to involve more than 30 MSMEs for the entire project duration.
"The project would involve more than 30 MSMEs and would lead to employment generation of 1200 Mandays per day for the project duration," the MoD release said.
