Radome And Special Steel Tech Transferred By DRDO To Industry To Power India's Missile And Naval Programmes

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has transferred three advanced materials technologies developed by its Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad, to industry partners, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Thursday (4 August).

The technologies transferred include high-strength radomes licensed to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Jagdishpur, for the production of protective covers for missile sensors, enhancing self-reliance in missile systems.

DMR-1700 steel sheets and plates were licensed to Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), Angul, offering ultra-high strength and fracture toughness for critical defence applications.

DMR 249A HSLA steel plates were licensed to Bhilai Steel Plant (SAIL) for naval applications, meeting stringent dimensional, physical, and metallurgical requirements.

The formal handover took place on 30 August, where DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat, presented Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology (LAToT) documents to the firms.

The Ministry of Defence said that partnering with established industrial players will ensure that these innovations are rapidly scaled and deployed for commercial and strategic use

On the occasion, DMRL also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of the Ministry of Civil Aviation to leverage its expertise, facilities, and capabilities to support the bureau’s activities.
