China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun. (Xinhua)
China has been forced to give up its "technical" hold on the designation of Lashkar-e-Taiba's (LeT) deputy chief, Abdul Rehman Makki, as a global terrorist by the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) 1267 sanctions committee, reported Hindustan Times.
Abdul Rahman Makki is the brother-in-law of the United Nations (UN) designated global terrorist Hafiz Saeed and has a $2 million bounty over his head. He used to route funds from the middle-east to terror groups under the garb of being the head of the foreign relations committee.
Earlier in June 2022, China, as a permanent UNSC member had blocked Makki’s listing as a terrorist as well.
But this time, with 14 out of 15 members on its side, India made it clear that it would continue to raise the listing of the Lashkar terrorist and the role played by China in providing cover to Pakistan-based groups until its objective was achieved.
Over the years, China has worked as an ally of Pakistan in the UNSC by blocking efforts made by India, the United States and France to get Pakistan-based terrorists like Hafiz Saeed, Jaish-e-Mohammed's Masood Azhar and his brother Rauf Azhar listed as global terrorists.
Masood Azhar’s and Hafiz Saeed's listing was blocked 4 times.
The designation of Makki as a global terrorist will restrict his foreign travel and put pressure on the LeT's ability to collect funds for running its activities in India and particularly in the Union Territory (UT) of Kashmir.
