Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 5 pm today, NDTV reported citing top government sources.
The subject of the address has not been confirmed, leading to speculation on possible themes.
The timing of the address is notable as it comes on the eve of Navratri, the day from when the GST rate cuts will kick in, with the prices of several products set to come down.
The new set of GST reforms - from the earlier four slabs to two slabs - are set to come into force from September 22 (Monday), the first day of Navratri.
Other issues being speculated include the US crackdown on H-1B visa holders, affecting thousands of Indian professionals, and India’s ongoing tariff dispute with Washington.
Since taking office in 2014, the Prime Minister has often used national addresses to announce major decisions.
Most recently, PM Modi addressed the nation on 12 May 2025, when he spoke about Operation Sindoor, India’s counterstrike on Pakistan-based terrorist infrastructure after the Pahalgam terror attack.
Prime Minister's address will come at a time when India's ties with the US have become tense in the past few months due to Trump Administration's 50 per cent tariffs, including an additional 25 per cent levy, on New Delhi over its purchase of Russian oil.
The US and other countries have imposed sanctions on Russia over its invasion into Ukraine in 2022.
The upcoming address also comes after the Trump administration hiked the annual fee for new H-1B visa applications to $100,000 (over Rs 88 lakh), sparking chaos and panic among Indians, which constitutes a majority of H-1B holders.
