Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is scheduled to visit the United States on 22 September to accelerate talks on a bilateral trade agreement.
The visit comes on the heels of positive discussions held in New Delhi last week, where negotiators from both sides made headway in resolving ongoing tensions.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Goyal will lead a high-level delegation to Washington for in-depth deliberations aimed at forging a mutually beneficial deal.
This move follows a meeting on 16 September 2025, between Indian officials and a US team led by Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch.
The talks were reportedly productive, focusing on easing trade barriers amid recent US tariffs imposed on India over Russian oil purchases.
It is worth noting that Indian exporters, particularly in labour-intensive sectors like textiles, footwear, and fisheries, have been hit hard by these tariffs, leading to cancelled orders.
Goyal's trip is expected to address these issues directly, building on the strong strategic partnership between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, Goyal expressed optimism during a recent event in Abu Dhabi, stating that the first tranche of the trade deal could be finalised by November 2025.
He emphasised India's commitment to self-respect in trade dealings, refusing to bow to unilateral measures.
The visit underscores efforts to boost India's exports, projected to grow by 6 per cent this year, as the nation transitions from a $4 trillion to a $30 trillion-plus economy.
With both sides in active dialogue, the outcome could significantly impact bilateral trade volumes, currently affected by penalties and restrictions.
