Cardiologists warn against heavy exercise for long-term Covid-19 patients due to added strain on their hearts.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, in reference to an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study, cautioned that individuals who have previously experienced a severe episode of COVID-19 should refrain from strenuous physical activity for a period of one to two years to reduce the risk of heart attacks and cardiac arrests, NDTV reported.
In recent times, there have been reports of heart-related deaths in Gujarat, including during the Navratri festivities known as 'garba' events. In response to these concerns, State Health Minister Rushikesh Patel convened a meeting with medical experts, including cardiologists, to investigate the causes and potential solutions for these incidents.
Mansukh Mandaviya stated, "The ICMR has conducted an extensive study which suggests that individuals who have endured a severe COVID-19 infection should avoid overexertion. They should refrain from engaging in rigorous workouts, running, and strenuous exercises for a specified period, typically one to two years, to minimise the risk of heart attacks."
Several individuals who suffered fatal heart attacks included Veer Shah, a Class 12 student from Kheda district, 28-year-old Ravi Panchal from Ahmedabad, and 55-year-old Shankar Rana from Vadodara.
Notably, before the commencement of the Navratri festivities, the State Health and Family Welfare Department issued a notification mandating garba event organisers to have an ambulance and a medical team on-site to provide immediate assistance to participants.
