The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the doubling of the Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat railway line, covering 177 km across Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, at a cost of approximately Rs 3,169 crore.
The project will enhance line capacity, improve mobility and provide greater efficiency and reliability for Indian Railways.
Multi-tracking is expected to ease congestion and streamline operations on one of the busiest routes of the railway network.
The government said the project is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of a “New India” and will create fresh opportunities for employment and self-employment, driving growth in the region.
Planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the project focuses on improving multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning and consultations.
It will extend the rail network by 177 km and benefit five districts across the three states.
Around 441 villages and nearly 28.72 lakh people, including those in the Aspirational Districts of Banka, Godda and Dumka, are expected to benefit directly.
The section is an important route for the transportation of coal, cement, fertilizers, bricks and stones.
The doubling will facilitate an additional 15 million tonnes of freight traffic annually.
The government said the project will contribute to climate goals by reducing oil imports by nearly 5 crore litres and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 24 crore kilograms, an effect comparable to planting one crore trees.
