Assam's Healthcare System Gets A Boost: PM Modi Inaugurates Northeast's First AIIMS, Three New Medical Colleges

  • Amid series of initiatives to advance healthcare in the northeastern region, the Prime Minister also kicked off the distribution of 1.1 crore Ayushman cards to deserving beneficiaries.

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the Northeast located in Guwahati, Assam.

The medical facility was constructed at a cost of Rs 1,123 crore.


In addition, he virtually launched three medical colleges in Nalbari, Nagaon, and Kokrajhar. These medical colleges will be equipped with 500-bed tertiary care teaching hospitals and 24 undergraduate departments.

The MBBS program in each college will initially admit 100 students annually, leading to a total intake of 1500 MBBS students in Assam.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister also initiated the construction of the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII), which is a collaborative effort between the state government and IIT Guwahati.


Amid series of initiatives to advance healthcare in the northeastern region, the Prime Minister also kicked off the distribution of 1.1 crore Ayushman cards to deserving beneficiaries. With these cards in their hands, the beneficiaries can easily access cashless medical treatment benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh.
