The Chennai Metro.
The Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) has a challenging station to construct in its Phase-II project.
At a depth of 115 feet below the ground and four levels high, Thirumayilai station will be the last station to finish construction in 2028 as part of the Phase-II project. It will be the deepest metro station in the city at 35 m depth.
Phase-II comprises three corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (corridor-3), Light House to Poonamallee (corridor44), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (corridor-5).
This station serves as the junction for Corridor-3 and Corridor-4.
The 118.1 km Chennai metro Phase-II project is expected to cost approximately Rs 61,843 crore.
CMRL officials have revealed that it was a difficult undertaking since the road space was narrow and geological conditions were challenging.
Thirumayilai station will cover an area of 4,854.4 sqm, and it will connect the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) station and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus stop.
It is located underneath the junction of Luz and Canal Bank Road in Mylapore. The Thirumayilai station will differ from other stations in Phase-II as it will have five entry/exit points instead of two.
Phase-II project's elevated stretch operations are expected to commence between 2025–2027. Underground operations will begin in 2028.
