Chennai's Second Airport At Parandur To Feature Cargo Village Linked To Logistics Park

The proposed greenfield airport at Parandur will include a cargo village to handle trade consignments, with direct connectivity to the upcoming multimodal logistics park in Mappedu, according to Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) Managing Director Sandeep Nanduri.

This development is part of the master plan for the new airport.

The proposed second airport for Chennai, located in Parandur, Kancheepuram district has received site clearance from the centre.

According to TIDCO's plan, the greenfield airport will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 32,704 crore and constructed in four phases. The airport, which will feature three terminal buildings, is designed to accommodate 100 million passengers annually.

Construction of the first phase is set to begin in January 2026 and conclude by December 2028. The subsequent phases will follow, with the final phase expected to be completed by December 2046.

In addition, the planned airport in Hosur will feature infrastructure to meet the needs of manufacturing industries in the region, including those focusing on electric vehicles and semiconductors. The allotment of land for this airport is still pending.

Nanduri also highlighted the state's ongoing efforts to develop high-speed rail and freight corridors in partnership with Indian Railways.

“We have submitted the report and are evaluating the routes to be taken up. The study has covered various routes like Madurai-Thoothukudi, Coimbatore-Thoothukudi, and Chennai-Hosur,” he said.

During the conference, Sunil Paliwal, Chairman of Chennai Port Authority, emphasised the importance of shore power facilities at Kamarajar Port, which will significantly reduce emissions from vessels docked at the port.

The proposed developments are part of Tamil Nadu's broader push to improve logistics infrastructure, boosting trade and supporting local industries while enhancing environmental sustainability.

State Chief Minister M K Stalin said that both, the existing airport at Meenambakkam and the upcoming airport at Parandur, would function simultaneously, catering to the rapidly increasing demand in the civil aviation sector.

Similar to Delhi (Delhi and Noida airports), Mumbai (Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports) and Goa (Dabolim and Mopa airports), Chennai may soon get two airport systems.
