As a testament to numerous benefits of the mass rail transit system, a study conducted by The Energy Research Institute (TERI) found that the Delhi Metro services helped its users save 269 million hours of travel time in 2021.

Further, TERI estimated that the annual time saved by passengers will more than double to 572.5 million hours in 2031.

These figures are significant since people's time consumed on the road while travelling is continuously increasing in all cities in the country.

In addition, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) helped remove over five lakh vehicles from the streets of the national capital daily in 2021. This figure has also increased from about 4.74 lakhs in 2019.

"Delhi Metro has been one of the most responsible organisations when it comes to its care for the environment. It is also a pioneer in solar power generation with a present capacity of about 37 MW," it added.

Also, Delhi Metro remains the first rail-based organisation globally to claim carbon credits for its regenerative braking and modal shift initiatives.

DMRC has earned Rs 19.5 crore from the sale of 3.55 million carbon credits that it had collected over six years from 2012 to 2018.

In 2007, Delhi Metro became the first Metro or Railway project in the world to be registered by the United Nations under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which enabled Delhi Metro to claim carbon credits for its Regenerative Braking Project.
