The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has recently approved the much-awaited Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase-II, a significant step towards revolutionizing the public transport system of the city.

This new phase, covering three corridors over a span of 118.9 kilometers with 128 stations, is expected to be completed by 2027 at a cost of Rs 63,246 crore. Once operational, Chennai’s metro rail network will extend to 173 kilometers, transforming public transportation across the city.

The cabinet approval comes just six days after Chief Minister M K Stalin visited New Delhi, held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as per The New Indian Express report.

Improved Connectivity and Ease of Travel
The Phase-II expansion will introduce three new corridors, covering key areas across the city: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 km with 50 stations), Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass (26.1 km with 30 stations), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (47 km with 48 stations).

These new corridors are designed to create seamless connectivity between Chennai’s north, south, east, and west regions, serving major hubs like Perambur, Thirumayilai, Adyar, Kodambakkam, and SIPCOT, as well as rapidly developing areas like Sholinganallur, which is part of the burgeoning IT corridor. This comprehensive connectivity will ensure that large sections of the population have access to efficient and reliable public transportation, benefiting both residents and businesses.

Relieving Traffic Congestion
Chennai is infamous for its traffic congestion, which is only set to worsen as the city grows. The expansion of the metro network will provide a viable alternative to road transport, easing the pressure on the city's roads.

With more commuters opting for the metro, the reduced road traffic will help to improve the movement of vehicles, reduce travel times, and enhance road safety. The reduction in traffic congestion will especially benefit routes that are currently heavily overloaded with vehicular traffic.


As the city’s air quality has been a growing concern, the Phase-II expansion is an important step toward a more sustainable urban environment.

The economic impact of Phase-II cannot be overstated.
