In a major milestone for Indian Railways' modernisation drive, the first pair of aerodynamic WAP-5 electric locomotives has been flagged off at Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) in West Bengal.

The newly introduced WAP-5 locomotives are equipped with several advanced features that are set to enhance the performance of the Amrit Bharat Express trains. One of the key improvements is the redesigned cab, which has been optimised for better aerodynamics, resulting in greater fuel efficiency.

In addition, the locomotives feature a real-time information system that enables smooth and precise train operations by continuously monitoring various performance parameters.

Furthermore, a remote monitoring system allows for improved diagnostics and maintenance through remote access, reducing downtime and ensuring that the trains operate with maximum efficiency, according to Financial Express report.

Amrit Bharat trains are characterised by their high-speed capabilities and unique Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) push-pull design, featuring non-air-conditioned coaches.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw previously highlighted the advantages of this push-pull configuration, citing improved acceleration, deceleration, and optimised travel times, particularly in challenging terrains like bridges and curves.

The implementation of semi-coupler technology minimises jerking during starts and stops, while the adoption of a semi-permanent coupler enhances passenger comfort and safety.

Looking ahead, India plans to manufacture at least 1,000 new-generation Amrit Bharat trains in the coming years, with efforts underway to develop trains capable of operating at speeds of up to 250 kmph.
