The Tamil Nadu government has floated a tender at a cost of Rs 3 crore, for a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Madurai metro. The DPR has to be submitted within 120 days.

According to a feasibility report that was submitted to the government recently, the city would get Metro Lite, instead of the conventional metro coaches. Metro Lite can be considered either an enhanced tram or a downgraded metro. Each train would have three coaches.

As per the alignment submitted in the feasibility report, the metro lite service would extend between Tirumangalam and Othakadai, a distance of 31 kilometres. The depot for the maintenance of trains would be at Tirumangalam on a 45-acre site. The entire line has been planned as an elevated corridor.

The alignment splits after Madura College.
