Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: 321 Km Viaduct, 398 Km Piers Completed; 4 Lakh Noise Barriers Installed

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) announced significant progress on India’s first bullet train corridor, reporting advances across bridges, viaducts, stations, and tunnels along the 508 km Mumbai–Ahmedabad route.

According to the corporation, 321 km of viaduct and 398 km of pier work have been completed.

Seventeen river bridges and nine steel bridges are now in place, while more than four lakh noise barriers have been installed along 206 km of track.

Track bed construction has been achieved over 206 track km, supported by the installation of over 2,000 overhead equipment (OHE) masts covering approximately 48 km of viaduct.

Excavation is also progressing on seven mountain tunnels in Palghar district.

In terms of stations, superstructure work in Gujarat is at an advanced stage, while construction on three elevated stations in Maharashtra has begun.

At the Mumbai underground station, base slab casting is under way.

Latest Milestone: Ghansoli–Shilphata Tunnel

Amid this broader progress, NHSRCL announced the completion of a nearly 5 km NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) tunnel between Ghansoli and Shilphata.

Excavation for this tunnel began in May 2024 and achieved its first breakthrough on 9 July 2025.

With the latest achievement, a continuous tunnel section from the Savali shaft to the Shilphata portal is now complete.

The remaining 16 km of tunnelling will be executed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), designed as a 13.1-meter single-tube structure to carry twin tracks.

NHSRCL highlighted that advanced safety systems — including ground settlement markers, inclinometers, and strain gauges — were deployed to ensure stability and worker protection throughout excavation.

When complete, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor will connect the two cities in under three hours, operating at speeds of up to 320 kmph.
