Mumbai To Replace 112 Year Old Elphinstone Bridge With City’s First Double-Decker Road Over Bridge

Mumbai has bid farewell to a historic landmark as the Elphinstone Road Over Bridge (ROB) officially closed on 12 September after serving the city for more than a century, The Free Press Journal reported.
Built in 1913, the British-era structure connected the Western and Central Railway lines at Prabhadevi and was for decades a vital east–west link.
But designed for a far smaller population, the bridge had become increasingly congested and unsafe, prompting plans for a replacement.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has tasked the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MahaRail) with building a new double-decker ROB, the first of its kind in the city.
Estimate to cost Rs167.35 crore, the project is expected to be completed within a year once approvals are in place.
“We are proud to be entrusted with the construction of Mumbai’s first double-decker railway bridge at Elphinstone. This pioneering structure is not just an engineering feat—it’s a symbol of the city’s evolving infrastructure. MahaRail remains committed to delivering state-of-the-art solutions that blend innovation, safety, and efficiency for the people of Mumbai,” he was quoted as saying.
The bridge’s design will span 132 metres across both railway corridors using an open web girder structure.
The lower deck will carry 2+2 traffic lanes with a footpath to serve local commuters, while the upper deck will accommodate 2+2 lanes linking the Sewri–Worli Elevated Corridor directly to the Atal Setu.
