Nagpur Makes History With Asia's Longest Flyover, Featuring First Four-Tier Design

In a monumental moment for infrastructure development, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated Asia's longest flyover on Saturday (5 October), marking a significant engineering achievement with the continent's first four-tier structure.
This groundbreaking double-decker flyover, located near the Gaddigodam Gurudwara on the National Highway, integrates four distinct levels of transit: a Metro line at the top, followed by a vehicular flyover, a railway track below it, and a road at the base—all converging at a single point.
The double-decker Kamptee Road flyover, stretching 5.6 kilometers from LIC Square to Automotive Square, was constructed by MahaMetro and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at a cost of Rs 573 crore.
The flyover now surpasses Nagpur's previous record-holding 3.14-kilometre Wardha Road flyover, setting a new standard for double-decker infrastructure with its innovative four-tier design.
During the inauguration ceremony, Gadkari emphasised the potential of using ultra-reinforced concrete technology, which is widely adopted in Singapore and Malaysia, for future infrastructure projects.
He said, "I have proposed this technology to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has entrusted me with implementing it in Parliament’s Vista as well as in upcoming Metro projects, which could cut construction costs by 20 per cent."
The newly inaugurated flyover is expected to reduce travel time, allowing commuters to cover the 20-kilometre stretch between Kamptee and Nagpur airport in just 20 minutes. Gadkari noted that NHAI has invested between Rs 1,300 crore and Rs 1,400 crore in Nagpur's three major flyovers—Kamptee Road, Wardha Road, and Pardi, reports Times Of India.
Gadkari also praised Nagpur Metro for achieving the lowest construction cost of Rs 350 crore per kilometre, setting a new benchmark compared to other Indian cities. He further announced redevelopment plans for Gaddigodam Market to facilitate smoother traffic flow in the area.
