The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has successfully launched the 10th steel bridge for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Measuring 60 metres in length and weighing 485 metric tonnes, this bridge marks the first steel bridge launch in the Ahmedabad district for the project.
According to NHSRCL, the bridge was launched over a Western Railway facility (laundry) adjacent to existing tracks.
The entire operation, which involved months of planning, was executed with precision in just seven hours.
For the transverse launch, the bridge was pre-assembled at a height of 16.5 metres on temporary trestles and later moved into position using two semi-automatic jacks of 200-tonne capacity each, supported by locking trolleys for stability.
A dedicated workshop in Wardha, Maharashtra, fabricated the 12-metre-high and 11.4-metre-wide steel bridge before it was transported to Ahmedabad on specialised trailers.
The construction employed around 20,360 Tor-Shear Type High Strength (TTHS) bolts, coated with a C5 protective painting system and elastomeric bearings for improved durability and vibration resistance.
A 35x60-metre temporary platform was also set up for the assembly, along with 14 skid arrangements for smooth transverse movement.
In Ahmedabad, the bullet train viaduct will pass through 31 crossings — including railway lines, flyovers, canals, and one river bridge across the Sabarmati River — along with six steel bridges.
Across the full corridor, a total of 28 steel bridges are planned, of which 17 are in Gujarat and 11 in Maharashtra.
The ten steel bridges completed so far are located at:
