Tata Motors' $1 Billion Tamil Nadu Plant To Manufacture Jaguar Land Rover Cars: Report

Tata Motors, the market leader in passenger vehicles, plans to manufacture Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) luxury cars at a $1 billion plant that it is planning to build in Tamil Nadu, reports Reuters.

The plan would mark the inaugural occasion of JLR-branded cars being manufactured entirely from scratch in India. The cars would be sold domestically and also exported, according to one of the sources, who declined to be identified as the plans were private.

In March 2024, Tata Motors Group inked a facilitation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government, initiating discussions on establishing a vehicle manufacturing hub in the region.

The MoU outlines an investment of approximately Rs 9000 crores spanning five years, potentially generating up to 5,000 employment opportunities, both direct and indirect.

Jaguar Land Rover stands as Britain’s largest automotive manufacturer, renowned for crafting and retailing some of the globe’s most distinguished premium automobiles. It has three car factories in Britain and also builds cars in China, Brazil and Slovakia.

Despite its global stature, JLR remains a niche entity in the Indian market, retailing models like the Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport, and Jaguar F-Pace. Currently, the vehicles sold in India are either imported as fully assembled units from Britain or assembled locally from imported parts near Pune city.

The specific JLR models slated for production at the new facility are yet to be disclosed.
