In a significant development for Thane's urban mobility, three firms have entered the bidding fray for the General Consultant tender of the Thane Metro project. AECOM India, DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH, and SYSTRA MVA have all submitted their bids (@BHiren).

The Thane Metro, officially termed the Thane Integral Ring Metro, is a 29 km circular line project with 22 stations, designed to connect various parts of Thane and integrate with Mumbai Metro’s existing lines.

The project, with an estimated cost of Rs. 12,200 crore, has undergone several redesigns since its inception. Initially planned as a conventional metro, financial constraints led to a brief suspension in 2019. It was later revived as a light rail transit system before being reverted to a standard metro design in 2023.

The route will traverse Thane's most densely populated areas, including Wagle Estate, Manpada, Waghbil, Balkum, Rabodi, and Thane Railway Station. These areas have seen significant development over the past decade and are still transforming.

Projections indicate that the project will serve 6.47 lakh passengers daily by 2029, increasing to 7.61 lakh by 2035, and further to 8.72 lakh by 2045.
