Titagarh Rail Systems Bags Rs 350-Crore Rolling Stock Contract For Ahmedabad Metro, Second In A Row After Surat Metro

Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRL), formerly Titagarh Wagons has been awarded the contract for supply of 30 metro coaches for the second phase of Ahmedabad Metro Rail.

This was announced by the engineering company on Wednesday (30 August) in a regulatory filing.

Under the terms of the agreement, TRL will undertake design, supply, manufacture, testing, commissioning and training of 30 standard gauge coaches for Ahmedabad Metro Rail Phase-2 project. There will be 10 trains of three cars each.

The company received the letter of acceptance (LOA) dated 29 August, 2023 from the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Limited.

The order value is about Rs 350 crore and the prototype has to be delivered within 70 weeks from LOA and the entire delivery is scheduled to be completed in 94 weeks from LOA.


Korean firm Hyundai Rotem supplied 32 sets of trains, manufactured in South Korea, for the first phase of Ahmedabad Metro Rail, at a cost of Rs 1,025 crore. 

Interestingly, the Kolkata-based company, in June 2023, received a contract to supply 72 metro cars for the first phase of Surat Metro Rail at a contract value of around Rs 850 crore from GMRC.

Ahmedabad Metro Phase-II

The Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-2 is 28.25 km long, with two corridors and is essentially the expansion of the first phase of the metro.

The 22.8-km-long corridor-1 spans from Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar with 20 stations. Corridor-2 is a 5.4-km spur line from GNLU to GIFT City, with two stations en-route.

The union government had approved the Phase-2 project in February 2019 at an estimated cost of Rs 5,384 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone on 4 March 2019. The construction work commenced in February 2021.
