Agra Welcomes Metro Services As PM Modi Inaugurates Priority Section, Sixth City In Uttar Pradesh To Join Metro Club

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the priority corridor of the Agra Metro Rail Project via virtual mode on Wednesday. This corridor, spanning from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar (Jama Masjid), aims to provide tourists with direct metro access to UNESCO World Heritage sites including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Sikandra Tomb.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off the Agra Metro from the Taj Mahal Metro Station and also took a ride to the Taj East Gate Metro Station. The metro will be open to the public starting 7 March.

With the launch of metro service in Agra, Uttar Pradesh is the first state in the country to have metro facilities in most cities. The metro network in now up and running in Noida, greater noida, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Lucknow and Agra.

The ‘priority corridor,’ comprising six stations along a 5.2-km stretch is part of the Agra Metro line-1 between Taj East gate and Sikandra.

It has three elevated metro stations — Taj East Gate, Shaheed Captain Shubham Gupta and Fatehabad Road along with three underground metro stations — Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Mankameshwar.

The construction of the elevated corridor for the ‘priority corridor’ of Agra Metro was completed in 29 months, and the underground corridor in 23 months, marking it as the fastest underground metro project in India.

The Agra metro project encompasses two corridors, covering a total distance of 29.4 km. The first corridor, Taj East Gate to Sikandra, will cover a distance of 14.2 km. It has 14 stations — six elevated and seven underground.

The second corridor from Agra Cantt Station to Kalindi Vihar will cover 15.4 km long and will be completely elevated with 15 stations.
