Alstom India commenced the production of its Metropolis trainsets for Phase-IV of Delhi Metro today at its manufacturing facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

The production was commenced at a commemorative ceremony led by leaders from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Alstom India.

Earlier, in November 2022, the DMRC had awarded a contract to Alstom to deliver 52 trainsets, each comprising of six cars, to cater to three different lines of Delhi Metro’s fourth phase of expansion.

Valued at 312 million euros, the order includes the maintenance of 13 trainsets for a period of 15 years. This 360-degree scope is a game changer for India's metro segment as it will be the first maintenance project for Delhi Metro outsourced to an original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Under Phase-IV, the Delhi Metro is adding 64.7 km of new lines across three different corridors in the national capital, with 45 metro stations.

Among these are the 29.04-km-long Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg corridor, seamlessly extending the Magenta Line, and the 12.3-km Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor, which serves as an extension of the Pink Line, stretching from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar.

Further, the 23.62 km Tughalakabad-Aerocity corridor, that is being built as 'Golden Line', will connect the operational Violet Line and Airport Line from the respective ends.

Metropolis Trainsets

According to the company's statement, the Metropolis trains are the most advanced state-of-the-art green vehicles, engineered for a safe speed of 95 kmph and an operational speed of 85 kmph, with Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) driverless technology.

GoA4 metros, such as Sydney metro and Paris lines 1 and 14, operate fully unattended — without a driver on board.

Drawing inspiration from the tricolours of India's national flag, the door pillar for the saloon interior of the trains will be adorned with a blend of saffron, white, and green paint.

Furthermore, for Line 10, the train's front will be coated in a striking metallic gold paint, making it the first time for Alstom to use this colour for a metro project in India.

Over the years, Alstom has provided over 800 metro cars that are currently in use throughout the Delhi Metro system, which is one of Asia’s largest rapid transit systems.

The French mobility giant has also partnered with DMRC for several other projects, including successful implementation of supply and commissioning of train control and signalling system for DMRC’s Red line, Yellow Line, Green Line, Violet Line, Pink Line during Phase I, II and III.
