Delhi Metro Records Highest-Ever Ridership With 71.09 Lakh Passenger Journeys

Delhi Metro recorded its highest-ever count of daily passenger journeys on Tuesday, 13 February.
At 71.09 lakh passenger journeys, the number crossed the previous record of 71.03 lakh set on 5 September last year.
For perspective, the previous two highest recorded passenger journey count stood at 69.94 lakh and 68.16 lahk on 29 August and 28 August 2023 respectively.
Since its inception in 2002 the rapid transit system has expanded to nearly 393 kilometres, encompassing 288 stations across 12 corridors in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). Furthermore, an additional 65 kilometres of new lines are under construction in the national capital, which will take the network length beyond 400 kilometres in the days to come.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which operates the Delhi Metro, uses the metric of journey or line utilisation, which is calculated by the number of corridors passengers use to reach their destination.
A press release from the DMRC notes that the Delhi Metro has exceeded its projected figures, with an average of around 67 lakh passenger journeys on weekdays, marking an 8 per cent increase over the projections made for the year 2023.
However, the number of passenger journeys on the longest and most expansive transit system in India was considerably affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ascent of the Delhi Metro and its evolution into a monumental force within India's urban infrastructure is a compelling story of growth and transformation.
