Bhopal metro might be inaugurated by September 2023, though with a little shorter route than expected.

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) has set a new benchmark length to be operational to meet the Bhopal metro rail's launch date, which is 380 days from this Thursday (15 September).

About 4 km and five stations is the new target with a functional metro train depot cum workshop spread in about at Studd Farms near Subhash Nagar, reports Economic Times.

With Indian Railways' consent, civil infrastructure development connecting Subhash Nagar to AIIMS Bhopal has been advancing successfully.

The Bhopal metro rail will not run from Subhash Nagar to the AIIMS Bhopal on the inauguration day. The drop-off location near the railway station, would be three fewer stops.

Bhopal city would receive five stations in the about 4-kilometre journey for around Rs 7,000 crore, after more than a decade of planning.

The Bhopal Metro project, with two lines and 28 stations, is being built by the MPMRCL.

  • Line-2 (Purple Line): Karond Circle – AIIMS

  • Line-5 (Red Line): Bhadbhada Square – Ratnagiri Tiraha

  • MPMRCL is a 50:50 joint venture between the centre and the state government. By September 2023, the first section of the MP Metro Rail Network, in Bhopal and Indore, is expected to be open for use.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of metro rail lines in Bhopal and Indore was signed by the state government and the centre on 19 August 2019.

The combined length of the metro line in these two cities will be roughly 62.41 kilometres and cost more than Rs 14,000 crore.
