The government on Thursday (10 February) informed the Parliament that it has received as many as 16 proposals from the states and union territories (UTs) for implementation of metro rail projects.

The states and UTs that have sent proposals for metro rail projects are Delhi (1 project), Maharashtra (3 projects), Kerala (2 projects), Uttar Pradesh ( 2 projects), Jammu and Kashmir (2 projects), Tamil Nadu (1 project), Haryana (1 project) and Uttarakhand (1 project).

Besides, Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan have sent joint proposals for implementation of Delhi-SNB Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and SNB-Sotanala RRTS.

Delhi and Haryana have also sent a proposal for Delhi-Panipat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).

The information was given by Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

The minister said that Urban transport, which is an integral part of urban development, is a state subject. Hence, respective state governments are responsible for initiating, developing and funding urban transport infrastructure including metro rail projects.

"As per Metro Rail Policy-2017, the Central government considers financial assistance for such projects in cities or urban agglomerates, based on feasibility of the proposal and availability of resources, as and when posed by the concerned State or Union Territory (UT) government," he said.
