India's second Light House Project (LHP) consisting of 1,144 houses under the PM Awas Yojna will be inaugurated in Rajkot on 19 October.

The multi-storey residential project having 11 blocks has been built in 20 months using new technology from France for faster construction of houses.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hand over the keys to the allottees on Wednesday. The complex has all basic and social infrastructure such as shops, park, solar lamps, sewage treatment plant (STP), anganwadi and school within the vicinity.

In this project, “monolithic concrete construction using tunnel formwork” technology has been used.

The customised engineered tunnel formwork, two steel half shells are placed together and RCC casting is done to form a module.

Several such modules make an apartment. With tunnel forms, walls and slab are cast in a single day.

PM Modi had inaugurated the first such project in Chennai in May this year. The progress of four more projects are at different stages in Indore, Lucknow, Ranchi and Agartala.

In each project, different construction technology is being used.

Though the government had set a 12-month target for completion of these projects, there has been a delay, mainly due to the second surge of Covid-19 last year.

Foundation stones for these projects were laid in January 2021. The government had also announced prize money for developers who could complete them before 12 months and within 15 months.

The success of these technologies will pave the way for faster construction and delivery of houses in urban areas.
