Indian Port Cargo Traffic Grows By 6.8 Per Cent In June; 10 Of 12 Ports Show Growth, Doubling Last Year’s Numbers

Cargo traffic at 12 major Indian ports increased by 6.8 per cent in June, reaching 69.08 million tonnes compared to 64.69 MT in the same month last year, according to data from the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
Among these ports, 10 showed growth while two reported a decrease in traffic.
Last year, of the 12 ports under the control of the central government — only five ports saw an increase in cargo traffic while seven experienced a decline, as per IPA's previous report.
The 12 major ports in India include — Deendayal (formerly Kandla), Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (previously Ennore), VO Chidambaranar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip, and Kolkata (including Haldia).
VO Chidambaranar Port and Paradip Port saw respective growth rates of 7.73 per cent and 7.41 per cent, according to IPA.
Last year, VO Chidambaranar Port experienced the highest decline with a 14.15 per cent drop in cargo traffic.
Further, SMP Kolkata Port registered a 6.66 per cent increase in traffic handling, while Chennai Port grew by 6.09 per cent and Mormugao Port by 3.75 per cent.
On the other hand, Mumbai Port witnessed a 6.59 per cent decline in cargo traffic, and Visakhapatnam Port saw a 0.27 per cent year-on-year drop in June this year, as per the IPA.
