Indian Railways Electrified 21,413 BG Route Km Till FY14, Over 24,000 Route Km Electrified After 2014: Govt

The government on Friday (11 February) informed the Parliament that over 24,000 Route Kilometer (RKM) length of broad gauge routes have been electrified after 2014, compared to 21,000 RKM length of routes that were electrified pre-2014.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "Total Broad Gauge (BG) routes of 21,413 Route Kilometer (RKM) were electrified after independence till the year 2013-14".

"Total Broad Gauge (BG) routes of 24,080 Route Kilometer (RKM) have been electrified after 2013-14 to 2020-21," he added.

The minister further said that the electrification would reduce nation’s dependence on largely imported crude oil, thereby enhancing energy security of the nation, besides, contributing to a clean and green environment.

Indian Railways has a total Broad Gauge (BG) network of 64,689 RKM, including 740 RKM of Konkan Railway. Out of these, over 45,000 RKM i.e. about 71 per cent has already been electrified till March 2021.

Electrification work is in progress under different stages of execution on balance broad gauge routes.
