The Indian Railways is embarking on a significant initiative to establish mega railway terminals with multi-modal connectivity in cities with populations exceeding 10 lakh.

This effort aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Viksit Bharat' vision, aimed at bolstering national infrastructure.

The Railway Board has directed general managers of all zonal railways to explore extending this project to cities anticipating substantial population growth.

Shirish Kumar Sinha, Additional Member (Planning), has compiled a roster of cities meeting the population threshold and solicited recommendations for additional locations/stations. The Ministry of Railways has intensified its commitment to elevating passenger satisfaction and warned senior officers against any negligence in this regard.

Amidst the widespread deployment of Vande Bharat expresses, hailed as transformative trains, the Railway Board has prioritised improving passenger experiences by enhancing coach cleanliness and maintaining amenities at railway premises.

Principal chief mechanical engineers (PCMEs) of zonal railways have been tasked with vigilant oversight, ensuring consistent housekeeping and maintenance activities with swift, real-time interventions, as per The Hindu report.

Satish Kumar, Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), Railway Board, emphasised the urgency of this directive, urging PCMEs to address issues such as brake malfunction, air hose disconnections, and train separations that have impacted both passenger and freight operations.

He stressed the importance of thorough investigations into these incidents and the implementation of corrective actions in collaboration with the Research Designs and Standards Organisation.
