Karnataka: Power Tariff Hiked By Rs 2.89 Per Unit In June For Those Consuming Over 200 Units Of Electricity

The electricity tariff in Karnataka has been hiked by Rs 2.89 per unit in June.

This comes after the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah led state government had announced free 200 units of electricity for people of Karnataka.

The hike of Rs 2.89 per unit has reportedly been done to accommodate for the Congress government’s new Griha Jyoti scheme, promising households free supply of power with a cap of 200 units a month, reports Times of India.

The scheme has already come under fire, as before the assembly elections, the Congress had promised 200 units of power for free per household without conditions.

According to a Times Now report, Kannadigas will have to pay an extra amount of Rs 2.89 per unit if they fall in the more than 200 units slab while paying their power bills.

While the FPPCA for this January, which was supposed to reflect in March, could not be implemented owing to billing issues and scarcity of time for implementation, the FPPCA of Rs 1.49 per unit will be levied in June.

A tariff order, which was passed on 12 May, stated that the approved 70 paise per unit hike had to be claimed in June.

Along with this, arrears of 70 paise for April will also be added to the bill for June. Therefore, there will be a tariff increase of Rs 2.89 per unit this month, reports The Hindu. 

Further, the 'fixed charges' also saw a sharp rise - ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 75 - depending on the consumption load, in the electricity bills generated by the various electricity supply companies across the state for the month of June.
